Ideas & practical guidance

Development insights

Planning an application, online store or ongoing PHP work? Start with the decision holding up your brief: what the first release must do, how orders will be handled, or how to prioritise changes to an existing system.

Let’s talk

Decisions worth making clearly

A development brief becomes easier to discuss when it explains what someone needs to do and what happens next. These guides help you work through application scope, eCommerce operations and recurring PHP development before a feature list grows around unanswered questions.

You can bring us an incomplete brief. Knowing which rules are settled, which need investigation and who can answer the remaining questions gives us a useful place to start.

Put the guidance to work

Take one workflow from your business and use the relevant article to work through it. Note who starts the task, what information they supply, who handles it next and how everyone knows it is finished. Include an exception, such as a request that needs to be corrected before it can proceed.

Bring that example, any existing system constraints and the questions you could not answer when you discuss your brief. You can also explore the related service. We will still need to investigate the details of your project before agreeing scope or expected results.

Select the guide by the kind of uncertainty

Choose the article that matches the question you need to answer:

  • App scope: What must a user be able to complete in the first release, and what can wait? Start here if you have a list of screens but have not agreed how a task moves between people.
  • eCommerce scope: How will the storefront connect to product information, payment and fulfilment? Start here if the design is clearer than the process for accepting and handling an order.
  • PHP retainer: How will we choose, maintain and release an ongoing stream of work? Start here if improvements and maintenance compete for the same development time.

For example, a proposed partner application might let a partner submit a request and a staff member review it. Before adding more screens, work through what happens when information is missing: who asks for a correction, who can edit the request and when the review can continue. That example gives you specific rules to discuss and behaviour to check during a demonstration.

Choose discovery, first release or ongoing work

The stage of the work matters as much as the type of software. If you cannot explain what the current system does or which other systems depend on it, begin with technical discovery. Its findings can inform the brief for a rebuild or a smaller change.

If you understand the process but need to agree what to build first, use the app or eCommerce scope guide to define one complete task. If you already have a backlog and release process, use the retainer guide to consider how ongoing work will be prioritised. A project can move through these stages; you do not need to choose one development arrangement for its entire life.

Development-reading FAQs

A few useful answers before you decide.

Do I need a technical specification before reading these guides?
No. Begin with the people, task and result the business needs. Write down what you know about roles, records and connected systems, then mark the gaps. For example, “staff must approve a request” is useful even if you have not yet decided which staff members can approve it. The guides help you find those questions; technical discovery can investigate the existing system where needed.
Which article fits a new customer or partner application?
Start with app scope and map one complete task, including exceptions. Explain how users get access, what they submit and who acts on their request. Include the response they receive and what happens if they need to correct something. If an existing platform already performs part of the task, describe that too so the brief accounts for work the business can already do.
Where should an online-store brief start?
Read the eCommerce guide alongside your catalogue and order process. Identify who controls product information and stock, how payment is confirmed and who fulfils an order. Walk through one product from its listing to the point where the order is handed over for fulfilment. If the business needs to check a request before accepting it, consider whether a quotation or referral route fits better than checkout.
How can the retainer guide help an existing PHP system?
Use it to separate planned improvements, maintenance and incidents, then ask how each will be prioritised within the available capacity. Establish who chooses the next task and who approves a release. Existing code and dependencies need assessment before support responsibilities can be agreed; a retainer does not provide unlimited availability or automatically cover every historical dependency.
Can I compare build estimates using the articles?
Yes, as a checklist for understanding what each estimate includes. Put migration, testing, access, release and handover alongside the proposed features, and ask about any missing items. For example, an estimate that includes moving existing records covers different work from one that assumes the application starts empty. The articles do not supply a universal rate or timeline; the requirements and condition of your systems still need review.
What evidence should we ask for at a milestone?
Ask to see the result the milestone was meant to establish, together with relevant tests and known limits. For the partner-request example above, that could mean showing a request being submitted, returned for correction and reviewed again. Include the staff member who will handle the task after handover. A working screen alone leaves questions about the rest of the process; an investigation milestone may instead need findings that explain what can be built and what remains uncertain.

Enterprise application and modernisation guides

For a more specific engineering question, start with tenant security when planning how separate organisations use an application, or role-based permissions when deciding what different users can do. Continue with data orchestration, document processing or multi-location reporting according to the work your system must handle. The articles use illustrative examples and link to relevant solution pages and anonymised delivery accounts.
