Engineering and commercial decisions

Separate business rules, integrations and delivery concerns so a PHP application remains understandable as its commercial requirements change.

## Make the business rule explicit

A pricing rule hidden inside a controller is difficult to review and easy to apply differently in an import job. Give that rule a small, named place in the PHP application: an application service with clear inputs and an output. Let the surrounding code read the HTTP request, fetch the necessary records and save the result. A maintainer should be able to find the calculation without tracing a whole web request.

For example, imagine that both checkout and a spreadsheet import create orders. Write down the information that determines the price, then pass the same example order through both routes. Both should ask the same pricing service for the result. If the import calculates its own price, a later rule change has two places to go wrong.

We would also ask someone who understands the pricing policy to check the examples. A test can confirm that the code still returns a particular result; the business needs to confirm that the result is the right one.

## Design for the next person investigating a failure

Suppose a customer record was accepted but never reached the CRM. A successful page response tells you that the website accepted the request; it does not explain what happened to the CRM delivery. Keep a correlation reference that connects those steps, along with the delivery state and the next permitted retry. Keep customer information out of general logs.

The useful question for support is, “What can I do with this record now?” Invalid data needs correction. A temporary vendor outage may need a later retry. A duplicate request needs a check of the earlier delivery before anyone sends it again. Make those distinctions visible so the operator can investigate without reading PHP source code or repeatedly submitting the form.

## Improve in reviewable increments

Start with a workflow your team changes often. Capture its expected behaviour in a regression test, then separate one responsibility at a time. For the order example, that might mean moving the price calculation out of the controller while keeping the current checkout and import routes in place. Check that the example orders still produce the expected results before changing the policy itself.

Ask about awkward cases before removing old code. An unusual branch may represent a business exception that nobody has documented elsewhere. Large rewrites can discard that knowledge. These are engineering planning examples, rather than an account of a particular client project or personal PHP experience.

## Apply this to your brief

Bring the current workflow, a representative example and the decision you need to make. A useful example includes what someone submitted, what should have happened and what actually happened. Remove customer information before sharing it. That gives us a concrete starting point for discussing whether the next step is to clarify a rule, investigate delivery or separate code that changes for different reasons.
